Dan has been many things over the years, but primarily a Gestalt therapist in New York City. He has worked for many years with Laura Perls. He is the author of several books, Your Life is a Mess, Opening Doors and The Gestalt Therapy Primer.

From this last book, A brief note about the history of Gestalt Therapy:

Gestalt Therapy was first developed by Fritz Perls and his wife, Laura, about 1950. they were helped at that time by Paul Goodman, Ralph Hefferline and Paul Weisz:

Fritz and Laura Perls were psychoanalysts who were trained in prewar Germany. Later, Fritz Perls was supervised by Wilhelm Reich. Earlier, Laura Perls, as a graduate student, attended lectures by the gestalt psychologists: Wertheimer, Kofka and Kohler.

Out of this background, and as a result of their experience, they became aware of the limitations of psychoanalytic theory, and they began to experiment with new ways of working with patients and thinking about therapy.

In the beginning, Fritz and Laura Perls thought about naming their new form of therapy "concentration therapy," "awareness therapy," or "existential therapy," but they settled on "gestalt therapy." During the 1960's Fritz Perls migrated to California and British Columbia while Laura stayed in New York. The major differences in Gestalt Therapy arise from their differences in theoretical orientations and ways of working with patients, as they continued to develop their own styles.
